Sorry I have been a no show on here! The last few weeks of pregnancy were an exhausting few, with many chores that needed to be completed before we brought our new little man home. And then when I thought I had at least a week to go, my waters broke 1 week before my due date! I will post our birth story in the coming weeks.

WEEKLY TALLY - NUMBER 33 & GARDEN SNAPSHOT
I have been slowly cleaning up the winter garden to make room for my spring seedlings which I will start to sow at the end of this month and early next month. It's been a slow process as it's been getting harder to bend down and stay bending down, so something that would usually only take me a couple of hours, need to be spread over a number of days 15 minutes at a time. I am hoping to keep up with the garden this summer, even with a newborn! And those homegrown veggies are going to be even more important as bubba Will starts his first foods!

I'm starting to get baby broad beans after months of flowering! |
Still so many flowers! |
The celery has taken off! |
And the silverbeet bushes are getting larger leaves after a trimming! Excuse the massive weed! |
The chili somehow continued to fruit throughout winter, even though the chilis are smaller and the leaves sad. |

WEEKLY TALLY - NUMBER 32 & GARDEN SNAPSHOT
The garden is going wild! A combination of lack of energy and lack of time is really resulting in a jungle! But with the beautiful weather Melbourne has been receiving over the last few days I have started to tame the wild, and hope to head out there after this post and clean up the rest of the beds!

WEEKLY HARVEST - NUMBER 29
This week was quite a successful one, I had a bit of a clear out of some of my greens, as they were getting overgrown. Hopefully they can get some more light and produce bigger leaves. I picked nearly a kilo of leaves from one silverbeet bush and it didn't even look like it had been touched!

WEEKLY TALLY - NUMBER 21 & 22
My small winter harvests are seeing these weekly tallies actually being fortnightly. Although things have picked up over the last few weeks with more and more silverbeet and parsley thriving in this cold wet yet sunny weather. I also have quite a few purple cauliflowers that are starting to head and in a few weeks they should be ready to harvest. Looking forward to some more cauliflower puree, which we use instead of mash potato when we have too many cauliflowers. It is lovely and sweet and lower in calories which is always a bonus.

WEEKLY TALLY - NUMBER 18
There has been a little more variety this week, but still a small harvest compared to what I was getting in summer. At least the chickens are laying again, not as much as they were in summer but at least I am getting a couple of eggs a day. The winter veggies are coming along nicely which you can see here. Hopefully the beautiful sunshine today gives them a nice little boost before the rainy week to come.

ALL ABOUT - CAPSICUM/PEPPERS
I know it's weird to talk about a summer vegetable as winter is fast approaching, but this would be around the time that gardeners pull out the summer plants to make way for the cooler climate ones. When I tell people that you do not need to pull out your capsicums they are surprised, they are in fact a perennial and can produce year after year. This has been the second summer that my capsicums (and chilies) have grown for, with no reduction in quality or quantity, in fact I think they have gotten better, especially as they had a head start compared to if I had sown from seed.
The capsicums I currently have are Californian wonder, they were bought from the local hardware store. This is not something I would usually do, but I purchased them when we sold and re bought and our moving date was very late October, so there was no chance for me to raise seeds (considering the seeds were buried deep in out storage unit, who knows when I would have found them!) and I wanted to get my veggie patch going as quickly as possible. This year I did sow some seeds but as we were going on a one month road trip the seeds didn't get the attention I would usually give them while our house was being sat, so very few survived and they are still quite small. One has a teeny tiny capsicum on it now, but the plant should keep well for next summer! The varieties grown from seed are diggers club gilboa orange and diggers club sweet chocolate as well as a long sweet pepper variety and a small round light green variety that I acquired the seeds from from the whitehorse urban harvest.
When sowing the seeds they need warmth, so there should be very few cooler days left and no frost around. My method for feeding is quite a lazy one. I compost twice a year in Autumn and Spring and regularly apply spent chicken hay when the pen needs a clean (leaving the very soiled parts from under the roost for the compost bin) and applying worm wee when I have some or can be bothered. This seems to be enough for my veggie patches, and have had a very adundant crop from the soil (which was bought soil as we have raised beds). I do attribute this to the abundant worm life I have though as they are continually breaking down the hay and Autumn leaves that I like to spread on top. So it's kind of like a living working compost bin/worm bin veggie patch!
I have staked all my capsicums (and chilis) as I find when they fruit they get too heavy and want to lean or snap, so this helps protect the plant. I find this a very easy plant to grow, I don't need to do much and it rewards me with a brilliant harvest.
My favourite way to eat capsicum is to char the skins on the gas hob or under a griller, then remove the blackened skin. This creates a wonderful sweetness and can be eaten as it is in sandwiches or pizzas or as you would a regular capsicum.
I am linking up with Suburban Tomato so go on over and learn something new!

WEEKLY TALLY - NUMBER 17
The garden is picking up slowly, with hopefully a few more thing starting to ripen and grow in the next few weeks. The chooks are still on strike with one dedicated hen laying an egg for me every other day. I went to go get some lemons and found an abandoned bush of kumquats that is growing very poorly. It was planted too close to our lemon tree and receives no direct sunlight. I didn't even know it existed until I saw some little orange fruit on it. It seems to have a lot of buds on it so hopefully we will get some more, but the tree is very scraggly... My 2.5 year old son loves them even though they are incredibly sour.

The garden is growing well with a few more things ripening to be picked soon. Good news I found a couple of local food swaps, which I will be attending in the next couple of weeks with blogs to follow. I have been looking for food swaps for quite a while and then stumbled across these. Basically you take your excess produce and swap it with other peoples excess produce!

WEEKLY TALLY - NUMBER 9
This week I had a lovely travelling family stay with us for a couple of nights and they offered to help clean up the last of the summer veggies! There are no more tomatoes left in the ground. The marrows have been pulled up and the beds weeded. I have planted all my garlic, and seedlings of cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, celery and leeks. Seeds of salad varieties have been scattered, as well as pea, snow peas and broad beans been planted behind a trellis.
With all the wind we had in Melbourne on Wednesday night and all day Thursday My pumpkins came out worse for wear, many of the have been harvested curing for winter storage. I have a few more on the vines waiting it out for another week or two until their section of the vine dies off. I planted a dedicated strawberry patch in hope that they receive more sunlight and thus produce more strawberries. My little man has fallen in love with strawberries these last few months after hating them.

WEEKLY TALLY - NUMBER 7
This weeks harvest was pretty good. We had a lot of warm weather - a record breaker, so I am grateful for that, so my summer garden can survive and continue to produce. My tomatoes are nearly all gone, with the last handful ripening in this glorious weather. The zucchinis are still looking very healthy, but I am running out of freezer space to preserve them! The marrows have also picked up again and not sure what I am going to do with so many! Looks like we will be eating vegetarian for the next few weeks!

WEEKLY TALLY - NUMBER 6
This week hasn't been as successful as other weeks, as summer came to a close. My tomato plants are at there ends, with only a few tomatoes left on each bush. I'm hoping that at the end of this week, which the forecast said that it will be in the 30's, that the last remaining tomatoes will start to turn a shade of crimson. I purchased (naughty I know) some seedlings to plant and then will start with seeds again in winter. I find unless they are the large seeds I don't have much luck in summer. The intense heat kills the very delicate and fragile seedlings.

WEEKLY TALLY - NUMBER 4
This week was a pretty good week as well. I mainly harvested tomatoes, which I have started preserving in the freezer and this week I may cook up a batch to be bottled for winter. I'm surprised at how many tomatoes I have picked and how many more are still on the vines, which are looking very very sad. Not sure what is causing this but it's happening to my mums vines as well, I was thinking it could be the heat or just the end of the season...

CHORIZO AND ROASTED CAPSICUM PASTA SAUCE
Wow what a busy week is has been! not much action in the kitchen! After the pizza post, my husband worked a double shift so left overs it was for me. The next day was my birthday.; We usually go out to a nice restaurant but I was feeling very run down and exhausted. I just felt like deep friend prawns, tom yum soup, a boost juice smoothie and a cheesecake so my lovely husband ran around for over an hour to pick up all my goodies! Hopefully we get to go out to that nice restaurant sometime this week. On Saturday we went camping and on Sunday we had dinner with some friends. On tonight's menu is an easy pasta dish with chorizo and roasted capsicum in the sauce. Chorizo is a Spanish sausage and is one of my favorites. This is easy and budget friendly!
INGREDIENTS
1 packet pasta of choice I like to use penne
2 chorizos sliced
3 capsicums roasted on the stove, skin removed and slices
2 cans crushed tomatoes
salt and pepper
Put a large pan of water on to heat. Place capsicums on gas stove or under griller to blacken skins.
While the capsicums are roasting Start to fry the chorizo until oil starts to run. Drain. Remove skin from capsicums de-seed and slice. Add chorizo and capsicum, tomatoes and seasoning to pan bring to boil and simmer until pasta is cooked. when pasta water comes to the boil add pasta and cook until al dente. Serve

PIZZA NIGHT
Tonight I'm making pizza! Pretty simple but it's what I felt like eating.
Dough
1 kg plain flour
1 tbs sugar
1 tbs salt
1 tbs yeast
1 cup warm water and more if needed.
mix all ingredients until a dough is formed. Leave in a warm place to rest for a couple of hours until it is well risen.
Sauce
2 cans tomatoes
2 onions roughly chopped
4 garlic cloves
Saute onion and garlic until soft add tomatoes and reduce for 30 minutes until a nice thick sauce forms. Puree until smooth, season.
Toppings
Completely up to you. Today i felt like ham and pineapple and cheese.

I also felt like Ham, Salami, capsicum, pineapple mushrooms and capsicum cheese.

Other options are a bolognaise sauce base with roasted zucchini, pumpkin and capsicum topped with cheese
Roasted mediterranean vegetables with feta cheese.
Seafood like prawns, scallops with a white sauce.
chicken with homemade barbecue sauce, ham and pineapple and cheese
tandoori chicken with a tandoori sauce base, capsicum, onion mushrooms and cheese
potato and herbs
garlic butter
the possibilities are endless...whats your favorite topping?
